The novel is divided into three major themes:

1. World evils of slavery - Stowe persuades the reader that slavery is evil, un-Christian, and intolerable. As the whole plot involves the issue of slaver, Stowe advocates that slaves had to go through hard times in their lives such as seperation of slave families and physical/sexual abuse.

2. African American Prejudice - Stowe covers a great deal of the book dedicated to this when she uses the character Miss Ophelia and her relationship with Topsy as well as conversations with St. Clare to show the feelings and attitude of whites towards blacks.

3. Religion - Christianity is constantly portrayed in its shining light. Both slaves and masters look to God for help and comfort. Uncle Tom and George have their faith which keeps them alive after being beaten harshly; Eva's little heart has more faith than anyone and knows that she will go to Heaven and puts her faith and heart in God's hands.
