Mr. Shelby - A nice owner of Tom, Eliza, and Harry in Kentucky. Mr. Shelby isn’t really against slavery but he is kind to his slaves. However, he is forced to sell Tom and Harry to pay off his dept. He promises Tom that he’ll keep in touch with him and that he’ll buy him back as soon whenever he gets a chance to.
Mrs. Shelby - She is Mr. Shelby’s wife and a little nicer to her slaves than him. She thinks slavery is cruel and when Mr. Shelby decides to sell Tom and Harry, she cries because she thinks God may punish them for this. However, she is joyful when she learns about Eliza’s escape with her son Harry. She hopes God will bless them.
Eliza - She is a young, brave, slave woman who runs away with her son Harry when she learns that Harry was sold to Haley. She wants to get to Canada to get her freedom. She is compelling because she demonstrated the courage to escape and confront Mrs. Shelby about her thoughts on Harry being sold and even had the will to do what it took to save Harry.
George - Eliza’s husband who was owned by a cruel slave owner. He too runs off his plantation and is ready to fight to his death for freedom because he believes slavery is cruel. He is compelling because he speaks his mind and has the drive to succeed even under his harsh living conditions. He escaped for what was right and followed his heart.
Harry - Eliza’s and George’s son who is sold to Haley by Mr. Shelby.
Uncle Tom - He is a man that is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Shelby. Tom is a religious individual who is loyal and faithful to his owner. All the masters that own him trust him because they know he wouldn’t try and do anything against their will. Tom also teaches the Bible at church services on his plantation. He is sold by Mr. Shelby to Haley, and then from Haley to St. Clare. He is compelling because as a humble Christian he constantly put up with everything and played the cards he was dealt. When he was notified of the deal Shelby made to sell him, he still wanted to remain trustworthy even after he had been promised freedom that he would not be granted. At St. Clare’s plantation, Tom is treated kindly until Eva and her father die. Tom is then sold to a cruel man named Simon Legree. Refusing to beat other slaves on Legree’s plantation, Tom is beaten and whipped severely. Eventually, he dies because of this but was faithful to God until the very end.
Aunt Chloe - She is Tom’s wife and a cook for Mr. and Mrs. Shelby.
Haley - This guy is a slave trader from the “deep south” who bought Tom and Harry (Harry gets away before he’s actually taken) from Mr. Shelby. He is cruel but not too bad as others. He is a man that would snatch a child from her mother, sell the child, and not feel the slightest bit of guilt. He is compelling because as a very convincing and persuasive slave trader, he set the whole stage for the book, ripping slaves away from their families. He has the drive to succeed and get what he wants even if it is not in the best interest for others.
“Mas’r” George - He is Mr. and Mrs. Shelby’s son who is close friends with Uncle Tom. He gives him a dollar coin and promises to help Tom out later on. A few minutes before Tom dies, Mas’r George came down to Louisiana to buy his freedom. After Tim died, George buries him and frees all his slaves.
The Quakers - They are a nice group of religious folks who take care of Eliza and her son Harry when they run away from their plantation. They help reunite Eliza and George. They house, feed, comfort, and do whatever they can to help them out. They are also working on helping them get to Canada safely. They prove somewhat compelling because they remained persistent in helping any slave that came their way, even if it became illegal under the slave fugitive act. If it were not for them, George and Eliza certainly would not have survived.
St. Clare - He is a slave owner from the south who bought Tom from Haley. Overall, he is kindhearted to his servants and doesn’t treat them like dogs. He isn’t against slavery all the way because he owns slaves but has an idea that it’s wrong.
Marie - She is St. Clare’s wife and isn’t nice to her slaves at all. She believes that slaves are a “degraded people” and shouldn’t be treated like everyone else. Marie doesn’t have much appreciation for anything. Marie’s selfish and unsympathetic attitude leads her to selling her slaves instead of granting them freedom after St. Clare’s death.
Miss Ophelia - She is St. Claire’s cousin who came over to live with them for a while. She believes slavery is cruel but is kind of like, “oh well.” It is revealed that she, being an abolitionist from the north, actuallyhates the blacks and does believe they’re a degraded people after St. Clare hands Topsy over to her Charge.
Evangeline - She is St. Clare’s and Mary’s daughter. She is called Eva for short. She is a cute, smart, and energetic girl who finds sympathy for slaves at a young age. St. Clare is influenced in buying Tom because of Eva’s companionship with him. Eva believes slavery is wrong. She is compelling because she convinced St.Clare to adapt Tom and constantly works to better the lives of any slave she encounters. She speaks from her heart and wants to make slaves happy. Later on though, Eva becomes ill and dies. She was considered an angel by everyone on the plantation and her death brought much sorrow.
Topsy - A slave girl who has been mistreated all her life. Being separated from her parents, she doesn’t know anything about her family. When St. Clare bought her, he gave her to Miss Ophelia who was hoping to teach her good morals. However, Topsy doesn’t become a “good” girl until Eva talks with her and shows her some love.
Simon Legree - A cruel slave owner from Louisiana who buys Uncle Tom off the auction after St. Clare dies. Legree is a vicious and barbaric man who’s full of violence and has no sympathy. He orders to beat Tom because of his Christian faith. Eventually, he beats him so much that Tom dies.
Cassy - She is Legree’s mistress. Her life at Legree’s plantation has brought her to believe that God doesn’t listen to the slaves anymore.
Emmeline - A slave girl bought by Legree at the same time with Tom. She was bought to replace Cassy. Later on, Emmeline runs off with Cassy.
Sambo/Quimbo - There are Legree’s slave overseers who are trained to demoralize and keep slaves in order by beating and whipping them. A few minutes before Tom died, they accept Jesus and repent for being cruel to Tom, who gladly forgives them.
